Microbrew in the Big City: Heartland Brewery

Microbrew in the Big City: Heartland Brewery

Heartland Brewery entered the New York restaurant scene in 1995 at a time when brewpubs were shunned in favor of wine bars. The stigma has long been shed and, since opening their original Union Square location, Heartland Brewery has opened four more brewpubs across the Manhattan area.
The award-winning beer, once brewed on the premises, is now imported from their Fort Greene, Brooklyn facility. One of the most popular brews, Farmer John’s Oatmeal Stout, won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado. Most beers change with the season. This season’s beer, Smiling …read more

Top NYC Attraction: Empire State Building

“Affair to Remember” and “Sleepless in Seattle” made the Observatory of the Empire State Building one of the most famous New York City landmarks.  This architectural masterpiece only took 1 year and 45 days to complete.  Since it’s completion in 1931, nearly 110 million people have visited the observatory.  The building, which has it’s own ZIP code, hosts two restaurants, a sushi bar, three coffee shops, a drug store, a Hallmark card shop, a post office and two banks.

The NYC People Profile: Naked Cowboy

The NYC People Profile: Naked Cowboy

A few years ago my mom was visiting me in New York. As we were walking through Times Square she screamed “There’s the Naked Cowboy!” and took off towards a half-naked man with a cowboy hat. Horrified, having no idea as to what she was referring, I followed and learned of the photo-op phenomena that captivates the attention of visitors and residents alike: the Naked Cowboy.
Rain or shine, sleet or snow. He makes his appearances on the sidewalks of Times Square, dressed in white briefs and cowboy boots, with his guitar, dancing. Nothing stops the Naked …read more

Dining in the District for 15% Less

Dining in the District for 15% Less

Business has been slow for restaurants in the Theater District since last week when the Stagehand strike took effect.  In an effort to help bring new customers to the area’s suffering restaurants, many eateries are offering 15% off either the lunch menu, dinner menu, or both.
Check out the legendary Prohibition-era wine cellar at ‘21′ Club.  Try the raw bar at Blue Point Seafood.  Find out why Kyotofu had the "Best Cupcake" according to New York Magazine in 2007.  Or feast on a traditional Brazilian meal of feijoada and finish it with a Caipirinha at Brazil Brazil Restaurant.

Surviving the Broadway Strike

Surviving the Broadway Strike

With most of Broadway in the dark, it is a perfect time to discover the lesser-known shows that are playing Off-Broadway.
The definitions of "Off-Broadway" and "Off-Off-Broadway" are often misunderstood.  Though the theatre must be in Manhattan, the classifications of theatres is not strictly determined by the location but rather by seating capacity.  An "Off-Broadway" show may not have a seating capacity of more than 499.  And "Off-Off-Broadway" generally defines a theatre that does not have a seating capacity exceeding 99.  Avenue Q, Rent, and Spring Awakening all started as Off-Broadway productions and have moved on to be immensely Broadway …read more

The Great White Way Goes Dark: Broadway on Strike

The Great White Way Goes Dark: Broadway on Strike

More than a week has passed in the stagehand strike that has left most of Broadway dark and there appears to be little sign of a thaw. Over two dozen Broadway theatres are closed and will remain closed until the dispute is settled. Among the affected shows are the immensely popular Spring Awakening and Wicked.
There are a few shows that remain unaffected by the strike:

Shakespeare’s Cymbeline at Victoria Beaumont Theatre at Lincon Center (212) 239-6200. Until Jan 6, 2008. $65-$90
Mary Poppins at New Amsterdam Theatre (212) 307-4747. $25-250
Mauritius at Biltmore Theatre (212) 239-6200. Until Nov …read more

Your Guide to Not Cooking on Thanksgiving

Your Guide to Not Cooking on Thanksgiving

While I was at the supermarket this afternoon I glanced around to see that nearly everybody had a twenty pound turkey in their basket. That served as a gentle reminder that Thanksgiving is less than a week away and I am nowhere near prepared.
There are so many things to do on Thanksgiving that don’t include cooking all day: Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, football games, and preparing for the impending shopping season just to name a few. Fortunately, if you’re like me and thinking of taking this Thanksgiving off, there is an array of dining-out and order-in options that …read more
