Transportation 101: Newark International Airport to Manhattan

When flying into New York from an international destination I prefer to fly into Newark International Airport (EWR) as opposed to JFK Airport. The customs and immigration process seems much smoother and faster at Newark and the airport size is more manageable.

AirTran EWR-to-NJ Transit (or PATH): Inexpensive

The AirTrain at Newark International Airport will take you to the Newark Liberty International Airport train station where you can catch a train to Manhattan. The cost of the AirTrain is included in the price of the NJ Transit ticket. You will need to show the ticket before entering through the turnstiles prior to the NJ Transit platform, so keep it handy!

  • Via NJ Transit Take the AirTrain from your terminal to the Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station then take a NJ Transit to New York’s Penn Station. AirTrain & NJ Transit = $15
  • Via NJ Transit then PATH This option saves just over $5 but requires a transfer. Take the AirTrain to the Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station. From the Airport Train Station take the NJ Transit one stop to Newark Penn Station where you will transfer to the PATH train that will take you to World Trade Center in Manhattan. AirTrain & NJ Transit $7.75 + PATH $1.50 = $9.25 total

Express Bus from EWR to Manhattan: Inexpensive

Coach USA (operated by Olympia Trails) operates Manhattan-bound express buses from 4 am until 1 am, every 15-30 minutes. Buses depart from Terminal A, B, and C at Newark Airport and make drops at Port Authority Bus Terminal, Bryant Park, and Grand Central Station in Midtown Manhattan. The trip takes 30-60 minutes. $14 one-way, $25 round-trip

Shared Ride from EWR to Manhattan: Moderate

There are a number of shared ride services that operate from EWR to Manhattan. These are on-demand, door-to-door service vans that transport up to 11 people. Using a shared ride is not the fastest way from the airport because the driver will make stops for other passengers. You can expect the trip will take at least 70 minutes. EWR to Midtown: Super Shuttle $19 and Airlink New York $17

Taxi: Expensive

When going from Newark International Airport to Manhattan remember that in addition to the metered fare you need to pay any applicable tunnel tolls. Most meter fares are in the range of $50-65. There are two tunnels from New Jersey into Manhattan: the Holland Tunnel (Downtown) and Lincoln Tunnel (Midtown), both have a $6 toll for entering Manhattan. Expect the ride to be at least 30 minutes and double that to 60 minutes for times of peak-traffic.

My recommendation: AirTrain to Penn Station-New York. is the easiest and most cost-conscious when traveling alone or one other person.  If you have three people in your group, look at taxi options as a cab may be less per-person.
