New York Fashion Week Fall 2008 Wrap-Up
With the Marc Jacobs show yesterday evening, we can safely put another New York Fashion Week in the books. It was a star-studded, surprise-filled eight days. Oh yeah, the clothes were okay too. Here is a wrap-up of some of the most memorable (and a few forgettable moments) of the week:
The veterans put on a show worth seeing. Ralph Lauren brought out all of his Town and Country glory for the fall show. It was English-hunting-party-meets-English-wedding as most models donned plaid cashmere coats and feather-adorned hats. Carolina Herrera had a beautiful collection that was inspired by weekend jaunts to the French and English countryside. Deep orange and golds were dominant in the richly colored line. Oscar de la Renta had a divine show that defined modern elegance. De la Renta somehow made floral print skirts, ruffles, belted cardigans, and sequins look relevant. Amazing.
Just a few steps away from fashion disasters were Marc Jacobs and Sean Jean. If Marc Jacobs has anything to say about it, pewter, gray and beige will be the dominant colors this fall. And a few items I was hoping to never see again made an appearance at the Sean John show: boleros, patterned cardigans with leather accents, and sequined mens tops. While the worst of the 80s paraded down the runway, Sean Combs himself was front-row looking fantastic in a two-button suit and tie.
What Alan Greenspan was to the U.S. economy, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is to fashion. Here are few shows that Ms. Wintour felt were worthy enough of her attendance: Herve Leger, Jonathan Saunders, Calvin Klein, Zac Posen, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Bill Blass, Brian Reyes, Derek Lam, Michael Kors, Dennis Basso, Rodarte, Oscar de la Renta, Peter Som, and Thakoon. Ms. Wintour, however, was noticeably absent from Kimora Lee Simmons Baby Phat show which just proves that even after forty years in the industry Ms. Wintour still knows fashion. __________________________________________________________________
