Grab Your Kilt and Join the St Patrick’s Day Parade

The largest St Patrick’s Day Parade in the world will once again march up Fifth Avenue in Manhattan this Monday.

The first official New York City St Patrick’s Day parade was held in 1766 by Irishmen in a military unit recruited to serve in the American colonies.  The parade has grown into the largest St Patrick’s Day parade and includes more than 200,000 people.  The parade differs greatly from others because there are no floats or cars in the parade; just bagpipers and groups walking the parade route.  This year’s Grand Marshall is ESPN television personality (and total Irish-New Yorker) Tommy Smyth.

If you’re not in New York on St. Patrick’s Day you still may be able to catch all of the parade festivities.  Certain NBC affiliated will be broadcasting the parade; check your local listings.

Date and Time:  Monday, March 17th at 11am

Starting Point:  Fifth Avenue at 44th Street

Ending Point:  Fifth Avenue at 86th Street

Best Viewing:  North of 66th Street and Fifth Avenue where the crowds tend to be smaller.  The upper steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art also provide a great view.

Know Before You Go:  Drinking is prohibited on the streets of New York City and the NYPD will be everywhere– including marching in the parade!   Save your Guinness until after the parade and hit one of the Irish bars I recommended in yesterday’s post.
