Chelsea Market Shops

Chelsea Market Shops

What do I like most about Chelsea Market?  Both the building and shops are full of enchantment and surprises.  An unimaginative, fluorescent lit big box this is not!  For starters, this once upon a time National Biscuit factory, where ovens baked everything from Saltines to Oreos, is now host to a multitude of specialty shops vital to the gourmand in all of us.  The market’s layout gives the impression of punching through its walls into a bygone era of factory dynamism with historic pictures and displays affixed to the exposed brick walls.  It’s also unabashedly modern in a rough hewn …read more

Manhattan Cask Ale Festival

Manhattan Cask Ale Festival

Located on Pier 59, The Chelsea Brewing Company’s huge copper-clad tanks loom large behind the polished mahogany bar overlooking the white tablecloth dining area and spectacular sunset views of the Hudson River.  Little do visitors know, these seemingly placid digs are really the setting of a microbrew battle that has been waged against the mass produced giants since 1995. The Chelsea Brewing Co., Manhattan’s largest microbrewery, produces around 20 original beers bottling 100,000 cases annually, using their fully automatic grain-handling system, 46,000-pound grain silos, and an automated bottling system capable of handling 2000 bottles per hour.  Head brewer Chris Sheehan, …read more

Quality Food, No Attitude on the Side at Brooklyn Restaurant Week

The Fifth Annual Brooklyn Restaurant Week will begin this Monday.  Over 175 Brooklyn restaurants will offer a lunch or dinner prix-fixe menu for $23.  This is a great opportunity to taste some of the gentrification that has swept Brooklyn bringing top-notch restaurants to Park Slope, Bed-Stu, Canarsie, and every neighborhood in between.
Participating restaurants include:

Don Your Best Bonnet for the Easter Parade

Don Your Best Bonnet for the Easter Parade

What started as a very proper event during the days of the Civil War in the mid-1800s has turned into this:

Yes, the famed Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival will take place in Midtown again this year.  It may be called a parade, but participants don’t march, but rather wander up Fifth Avenue from 49th Street to 57th Street.  Stop by for awhile and admire the period costumes, outrageous headwear, and pet costumes.  Festivities will take place this Sunday, March 23 from 10am until 4pm.

17 Reasons I <Heart> New York

17 Reasons I <Heart> New York

Because it’s a 24 hour-a-day city.  You want Cambodian food at 3am on a Sunday?  No problem.
Because there are four very distinct seasons.
Because our fine drinking establishments are open until 4am.
Because New Yorkers are actually quite helpful and polite.  Really!
Because of the great public transportation system.  And if you disagree, just go spend any amount of time in Los Angeles.
Because you can buy anything.  Which may not always be a good thing, but we’ll focus on the positive!
Because while we have our fare share of celebrities, most of the paparazzi-obsessed celebs stay in L.A.
Because of Yolanda Vega.  Or, shall I …read more

UNICEF’s World Water Week Returns to New York Restaurants

UNICEF’s World Water Week Returns to New York Restaurants

Don’t be surprised if you walk into New York City restaurants and they charge you for the tap water you drink.  In conjunction with World Water Day, this week restaurants are asking customers to donate a minimum of $1 for the tap water that they would normally get for free.
According to UNICEF, World Water Week organizer, the lack of clean and accessible drinking water is the second largest worldwide killer of children under five.  It is estimated that with a donation of $1, clean drinking water can be provided for a child for 40 days.
Last year, over 300 …read more
