Your "One Thing" for This Weekend

Even if you do nothing else this weekend, you must see Pink Martini perform live at Avery Fisher Hall (Lincoln Center) on Sunday night.  Blending lounge, jazz, classical, and Latin beats, Pink Martini creates the ultimate vintage-chic, romantic-sounding, cocktail-hour music.

Formed in 1994, Pink Martini is comprised of twelve musicians, most of whom come from a jazz background and some of whom met while studying at Harvard University.  This “little orchestra” tours overseas and it is very easy to see those foreign influences in their music.

“Hang on Little Tomato” is one of my favorite albums.  It features songs in no less than six different languages.  Lead singer and chief-songwriter China Forbes’ voice is perfection in whatever language she chooses to sing.

Location: Avery Fisher Hall (at Lincoln Center), map, 212-875-5030

Subway:  1 to 66th Street-Lincoln Center

Date and Time:  Sunday, March 9th at 7pm

Cost:  $33.50-$73.50 available online

If you miss them this Sunday, Pink Martini will also be performing Tuesday, March 11th at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.

UPDATE:  I had the opportunity to attend the Pink Martini show this weekend and had a fabulous time!  China Forbes has a voice of an angel, Thomas Lauderdale on piano was perfection, Gavin Bondy on trumpet and Robert Taylor on trombone were great.   Derek Rieth on percussion was amazing.  I was most surprisingly impressed by Nicholas Crosa on violin.  He was amazing!  I could go on and on… the entire group was fantastic!

I attended the concert with a friend who had never heard of Pink Martini and he came away a newly converted fan (thanks Jason).  It was a great night.  If Pink Martini comes to your town, go check them out!

I love Pink Martini, and have heard them many times here at home in Seattle. Whether they’re outdoors at the winery, or indoors with the symphony, they have a unique sound.

While they are classically trained, there is nothing stuffy about their music or performances. They are clearly having fun, and bring you along for the ride.
