Want a place to rejuvenate after getting carried away with the sights in Flushing’s Chinatown? Across the street and up a half block from Town Hall, on the corner of Northern Blvd. and Union St., Udon West Noodle Shop overlooks both streets with large floor to ceiling windows. Service is brisk and efficient and the dishes are a bargain. Specialties include Udon noodle soups along with chicken and pork katsu (breaded and fried) served over rice and curry. As soon as you are seated, steaming cups of oolong or green tea instead of the usual water are whisked to your table. I recommend trying their seaweed soup with either soba or buckwheat noodles. Resist your inclination to wrinkle your nose and give it a try! Surprising for such a small eatery, they have an open kitchen behind glass where you can watch them prepare your food and make their daily batch of noodles. This is truly the place to get Japanese "fast food" that is good for you!
