MegaBus: Yet Another $1.00 Bus Line Serves New York City

megabus The “I-95 bus wars” have heated up even more as newcomer MegaBus has started serving the popular New York-Boston and New York-Washington DC routes.

MegaBus, a subsidiary of Coach USA Inc, began service out of New York on May 30, 2008, in direct competition to the Chinatown buses and Greyhound’s new BoltBus.  Traveling the East Coast from New York to Boston, DC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Buffalo, Atlantic City, or Toronto can be done on MegaBus for as low as $1.

MegaBus will have all buses equipped with free Wi-Fi but will not have outlets at each seat and, similar to BoltBus and NeON, they will offer at least one seat for $1 per bus.  Prices for the remaining seats will increase as the departure date gets closer and the bus fills to capacity.

MegaBus has already charmed the United Kingdom, the U.S. Midwest, and parts of California and Nevada with its low fares.  However it appears that Los Angeles-San Diego commuters couldn’t be talked into taking low-cost public transportation and the company recently suspended service on that route.

MegaBus departs New York from Penn Station or Port Authority, depending on the destination.  Tickets may be purchased online.

Hi Ayesha, I think you’re referring to the NeON, the bus that goes between Toronto and New York.

The deal with them, as well as most of the new bus companies (BoltBus, MegaBus, etc.) is that a limited number of tickets will be available for $1.

To increase your chances of getting one of those $1 tickets you need to a) book far in advance and b) travel at a time when nobody else wants to travel.

There aren’t many of those tickets, but I have met people who have scored them. Good luck!

For more information on NeON, the New York -> Toronto bus, check out:

Also, Megabus offers usually two $1 seats per trip, with BoltBus and NeOn offering one (or two) per trip.

As for NYC-Toronto service, Megabus offers it on its M24 line from both NY Penn and from Gate 309 in the PABT.

If you like Megabus, you should check out BusJunction, it’s a search engine for bus tickets and includes the major lines like Bolt Bus, Megabus, Greyhound, Vamoose, and some of the Chinatown lines too.
