Goodbye from Heather

Goodbye from Heather

I’ve decided to take a break from the world of pro-blogging and today is my final day at The New York City Traveler.  My sincerest thanks go out to all of my readers and fellow bloggers here at the Travel & Culture Channel.  Without a doubt, I can say that in my time here I have learned so much about the city that I thought I knew so well.
While I am leaving The New York City Traveler, I could never leave the city that I love so much.  You will still see me standing in line at my favorite food …read more

"Summer Streets" Takes Over Park Avenue

"Summer Streets" Takes Over Park Avenue

Following the lead of such cities as Bogota, Paris, and London, Mayor Bloomberg is closing down a major city north-south thoroughfare and only allowing pedestrians and cyclists.
Park Avenue will be closed to motor vehicles from 7am until 1pm on three consecutive Saturdays, August 9th, 16th, and 23rd.  The street will be closed south of 72nd Avenue to the Brooklyn Bridge.
Get out, meet your neighbors, and enjoy New York’s largest block party.

Emack and BolioÂ’s

Emack and BolioÂ’s

This place started back in 1975 amidst Boston’s hard rockin scene.  A place for musicians and folks on the edge to visit after the bars closed, some of the flavors are now named after rock stars like the Twisted Dee-Light after Dee Snider of Twisted Sister and Deep Purple Cow, black raspberry ice cream with white and dark chocolate chips and blueberries after…..well I’ll let you guess who.  And the funny name?  Well it came from the founder who was working as a pro-bono attorney on behalf of two homeless men. They wanted him to name the shop after them …read more

Fort Wadsworth

Fort Wadsworth

Underneath the Verrazanno Narrows Bridge, linking Brooklyn with Staten Island, sits Fort Wadsworth. One of America’s oldest military sites, this cluster of old granite and concrete fortifications actively stood watch over New York Harbor for almost 200 years. Today you can take ranger-led or self guided tours while enjoying panoramic views of NYC. Walking tours sponsored by the National Park Service take you through catacomb-like passageways, close along several crumbling batteries and the 35-foot walls of Fort Tompkins, where Union soldiers once stood watch over the Narrows for Confederate interlopers. Just down a steep hill sits Battery Weed, a U-shaped …read more

Nobu Next Door: Same Great Food with a Better Price

Nobu Next Door: Same Great Food with a Better Price

My courtship with Nobu was quick.  It was as soon as I tasted the wasabi that I realized that I would be a fan.  The green paste was unlike any other I had tasted before.  It was fresher, with a cleaner taste.  If a condiment can be that good, I knew I was in for a treat… and I was.
Like all good things, Nobu’s popularity as grown.  Just open up the society pages to see who has dined there recently.  It’s the Japanese restaurant for most of Hollywood.  In recent years, reservations have become impossible to procure but after …read more
