Galapagos Art Space
After more than a decade in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg, Galapagos Art Space couldn’t afford the rent in its prime North 6th St. location so it moved to over to DUMBO (Down Under The Manhattan Bridge Underpass). This new location and lower rent will allow them to focus on nurturing budding artists rather than hosting profit generating club-style parties. Right around the corner from St. Ann’s Warehouse, on the corner Water and Main Streets, the 2 story space features a mezzanine, reflecting pool and larger stage. More art-centric events are planned including theater, dance, performance art, cinema, puppetry, lectures, literary events, and fundraising events for non profits and local cultural groups. They also aim to be the city’s first cultural venue to have a LEED certified green roof. Most importantly, Galapagos is a refuge for artists who simply can’t afford NYC’s sky high cost of living. Staff believes that expansion of a 421-tax exemption program will link real estate development with culture, incentivizing maintenance and construction of ground level arts venues. Their philosophy is that wherever creativity is able to flow freely, culture, and consequently investment follows. All are interdependent and must be nourished cohesively. Come see for yourself if their concept is working. On September 22nd at 8pm, in keeping with the electoral season, they’ll be screening Nolan’s Run, a documentary film of libertarian Gary Nolan’s 2004 presidential bid. Fed up with politics as usual, this Cleveland tavern owner and former radio talk decided to do something about it and wage a cross-country campaign. His libertarian platform included legalizing marijuana and defending the absolute right to bear arms, at times making him so far Right that he was actually Left!
