Spiegel World

Its third season in NYC, Spiegel World, often described as "neo-carnival", actually represents many experiences.  As a traveling circus, it resembles Cirque du Soleil but it also includes a 25,000-square-foot open air venue encompassing a restaurant, bar, and beer garden with cabanas, hammocks, and nightclub under the stars, all with spectacular views of the three downtown bridges, East River and the Olafur Eliasson waterfall under the Brooklyn Bridge.  This year, two Spiegel tents, The "Salon Perdu" and "The Deluxe", an intimate 350-seat tent with circular stage, crown this site at South Street Seaport’s Pier 17.  These Spiegel tents (Flemish for "tent of mirrors") date back from the 1920s.  Originally constructed in Belgium as mobile dance halls, they’re made by hand without nails using teak, velvet, stained glass, and bevelled mirrors. Only fewer than 20 are now believed to exist worldwide.  Inside, productions include the world premiere of Désir, an acrobatic interpretation of La Ronde ("The Blue Room") which explores the tangled relationships of a nightclub’s staff in early 20th-century Paris.  Gazillionaire’s Late Nite Lounge will play six nights a week in The Deluxe, along with over 60 underground dance DJs from all over the world.  So forget that fall is just around the corner, sit back with a cocktail at sunset in the Green Fairy Garden, enjoy dinner at Squid and Martini, and after the show, dance under the stars!  Now through November 2 – Tickets range from $25 – $69
