New York comes a close second to Los Angeles in the number of people who are seeking fame.  Starry-eyed dreamers arrive in the Big Apple with hopes of one day seeing their name on a Broadway marquee.  If you’re seeking the limelight, be sure to add these two opportunities to your list of auditions.  Who knows, you may just be the next big thing.
“NYC Sound Tracks,” an eight-episode series on MSG and MSG.com that finds the most talented New York City subway performer, will be holding an open call for talent.  Auditions are on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 from …read more

How to Get the Hottest Tables in Town… For a Price

It’s Wednesday night and you need a table at the famed French brasserie Balthazar for 2 this Friday.  Or perhaps you just got into Manhattan for a trip and you want a table for 4 at the celeb hot spot Nobu.  In the often cut-throat restaurant scene in New York, unless your name is Michael Bloomberg or Rupert Murdoch, your chances are zero-to-none that you could get a reservation… until now.
TableXchange, a third-party online site, offers diners a platform on which they can purchase and sell their reservations to top-notch New York City restaurants.  Most reservations go for a …read more

17 Reasons I <Heart> New York

17 Reasons I <Heart> New York

Because it’s a 24 hour-a-day city.  You want Cambodian food at 3am on a Sunday?  No problem.
Because there are four very distinct seasons.
Because our fine drinking establishments are open until 4am.
Because New Yorkers are actually quite helpful and polite.  Really!
Because of the great public transportation system.  And if you disagree, just go spend any amount of time in Los Angeles.
Because you can buy anything.  Which may not always be a good thing, but we’ll focus on the positive!
Because while we have our fare share of celebrities, most of the paparazzi-obsessed celebs stay in L.A.
Because of Yolanda Vega.  Or, shall I …read more

UNICEF’s World Water Week Returns to New York Restaurants

Don’t be surprised if you walk into New York City restaurants and they charge you for the tap water you drink.  In conjunction with World Water Day, this week restaurants are asking customers to donate a minimum of $1 for the tap water that they would normally get for free.
According to UNICEF, World Water Week organizer, the lack of clean and accessible drinking water is the second largest worldwide killer of children under five.  It is estimated that with a donation of $1, clean drinking water can be provided for a child for 40 days.

What New Yorkers are Wearing this Spring

What New Yorkers are Wearing this Spring

I think it was Sex and the City that made the world think that New Yorkers walk down the street “Carrie Bradshaw-style” in 4″ Manolo Blahnik stilettos, leg warmers, and use giant flowers as fashion accessories.  I say that because one of the questions I field most often is “I want to look hip so what do I wear when I’m in New York.”  My usual answer: Black.  However, every often I see a fashion trend that is on everybody in the city.  The latest trend: Rubber Boots.
I was walking down Broadway in Soho yesterday and noticed that tons …read more

Average Salaries of New Yorkers

Average Salaries of New Yorkers

This morning I gathered up all of my tax information and found that I can expect a paltry tax return from the US government. But it got me thinking about the average salaries of workers in the New York City area. Here is an interesting comparison:
Everybody comes to New York City to be an actor. Many years ago, after seeing Chicago even I wanted to be a star on Broadway. I’m sure my mother is happy that I abandoned that dream. Not everybody makes $35,000 per week like Julia Roberts did for her performances in …read more
