Sniffen Court, one of New York’s only “gated communities,” is located at 150-158 East 36th Street (between Third Ave and Lexington Ave) (map), The buildings were built between 1863-64 and were used as stables by the residents of Murray Hill.  Since then, the buildings have undergone renovations and are now 10 individual houses.  The 1960s rock group The Doors shot the Strange Days album cover in Sniffen Court.  The court was designated a New York City landmark in 1966.

The Future of Contemporary Photography at the New York Photo Festival

The Future of Contemporary Photography at the New York Photo Festival

New York City’s first large-scale event dedicated solely to the art of photography, the New York Photo Festival (NYPF), is kicking off this week.
Featuring contemporary photography with curated pavilions, satellite shows, and the New York Photo Awards, the festival promises a full schedule of events.  The NYPF festival seeks to celebrate contemporary photography in all its forms, document the future of photography, as well as celebrate the people who produce the work.
Here is a quick preview of the event in an ad created by those every-creative DUMBO residents and famed Sprint commercial directors, the Snorri Bros.:

You can count on seeing interesting people in Washington Square Park.  This guy was offering “free hugs” and you would be surprised about the number of people that took him up on his offer.

Originally conceptualized in 1968 as a painting, Robert Indiana’s LOVE WALL, a 12-foot tall sculpture made of Cor-ten steel, is temporarily on exhibit on Park Avenue at 57th Street until May 15th.
For more of Robert Indiana’s art in New York, check out a photo I featured last week of his famous LOVE sculpture.

George Lois: The Esquire Covers at MoMA

George Lois: The Esquire Covers at MoMA

Starting tomorrow, New York’s MoMA will present photography of an American legend, George Lois.  Lois shaped thought in America with his invocative cover photographs in Esquire magazine.  MoMA presents prints of 31 of the 92 covers Lois created for the magazine between the years 1962-1972 in George Lois: The Esquire Covers.
Included in the display will be the famous and controversial April 1969 cover featuring Muhammad Ali.  After refusing to be drafted, Ali, a conscious objector, was sentenced to five years in jail for draft evasion.  In 1968, while Ali was awaiting his appeal, Lois posed him as the Christian martyr …read more
