Get Inspired! Human Rights Watch International Film Festival: June 12-26, 2008
Reporting and gathering information on human rights for a film is not an easy task. Too often, governments and financial restrictions stand in the way of filmmakers completing projects which is why each of the 32 films presented in the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival-New York is triumph.
The 19th Annual Human Rights Watch International Film Festival will feature 19 full-length films and 13 shorts from 20 countries, including 31 New York premieres. This year, nearly half of the films are by women.
The central theme of the film festival is human rights, but the festival features films that focus on rights issues from around the world:
- Calle Santa Fe examines the brutal Pinochet regime in Chile.
- American Outrage follows two sisters in their fight against the American government’s attempt to take their land.
- China’s Stolen Children (photo left) shows how the one-child policy has created a human-trafficking problem in China.
- Letters to Anna tells the story of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya’s life and tragic death, which is believed to have been ordered by her government.
