It was announced today that season 21 of MTV’s “reality” hit show The Real World is coming back to New York for the third time in the shows 21-year history and will set up shop in Brooklyn.

Featuring contemporary photography with curated pavilions, satellite shows, and the New York Photo Awards, the festival promises a full schedule of events.  The NYPF festival seeks to celebrate contemporary photography in all its forms, document the future of photography, as well as celebrate the people who produce the work.

Children’s Day in Japan is fast approaching and New York City’s own Japan Society is inviting children and adults to celebrate this historic Japanese national holiday. 
Festivities include performances of Japan’s classic stories for children: Peach Boy (Momotaro), Golden Boy (Kintaro), Story of the Old Man Who Made Withered Trees to Blossom (Hanasaka jiisan), and The Monkey and the Crab (Saru-kani gassen). 
Following performance, visitors can enjoy traditional snacks (kashiwa mochi) and create their own samurai helmets (kabuto) and carp streamers (koinobori), traditional Children’s Day decorations.

15th Annual New York African Film Festival

The 15th Annual New York African Film Festival (NYAFF) started yesterday, April 9, in New York and will run through May 26th.  The festival features over 40 films from 22 African countries.
The films in this year’s festival emphasize history and storytelling, technology and the future.  This year’s theme, “Cinema and History: Africa and the Future,” will mark the 50th anniversary of the independence of Guinea from colonial rule and will feature footage of this independence as captured by Russian archival footage.

Brooklyn Academy of Music: Not Just a One-Act Show

Most refer to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, or simply BAM, as Lincoln Center’s younger and edgier sister for performing arts. Its name doesn’t do it justice, BAM is an urban art center that hosts events in dance, humanities, opera, theatre, and, of course, music.
