The New York City Public Library
Headquarters of one of the largest public library system in the world, with a collection that only the Library of Congress can rival, the New York City Public Library main branch is a must-see attraction while in New York. Conveniently located in Midtown, housed in a Beaux Arts building with white marble facing, the library reopened in 2005 after a $5 million renovation.
Don’t miss the Rose Main Reading Room on the third floor of the library. This 636-seat room boasts 23-foot long tables with matching oak chairs. Author Norman Mailer and revolutionary Leon Trotsky, among others, have worked here. The two iconic marble lion statues located outside the main entrance are the New York Public Library’s mascots. Originally named Leo Lenox and Leo Astor, the were renamed Patience and Fortitude by former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.
Even if you don’t live in New York City or have a NYPL card, the library can be a worth-while resource. The Mid-Manhattan Branch has 48 PC’s in their computer commons. You may sign up for one 45-minute session per day; reservations can be made on the fourth floor. Free wi-fi is also available in all public areas to those who have their own laptop or wireless-enabled device.
