Transportation Between JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport

by Heather on January 28th, 2008

John F. Kennedy International Airport is truly the United States’ international airport.  Flights from Abu Dhabi, Casablanca, and Reykjavík arrive on a daily basis.  The smaller LaGuardia Airport has a large number of short-haul and regional flights with destinations mostly along the East coast.

Panic!  You’ve just realized that your Delta airline tickets have you arriving from Mumbai into JFK and departing out of LaGuardia five hours later for your regional flight to Charlotte.  Don’t worry!  I’ll cover all of the transportation options and make going from JFK in the south end of Queens to LaGuardia Airport in the north end of Queens easier than ever.

Airtrain JFK-to-Subway-to-Bus:  Least Expensive, Biggest Hassle

Take JFK’s Jamaica Station AirTrain route to Jamaica Station and catch the "E" train to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue.  Then catch the Q33 (Triboro Coach) to LGA airport.  AirTrain $5 + Subway $2 + Free Transfer to Bus = $7

Express Bus Between JFK and LGA:  Best Option

New York Airport Service operates buses between JFK Airport and LaGuardia airport from 6am until 8pm, every 30 minutes.  Buses depart from baggage claim at every terminal.  Look for the New York Airport Service bus stop.   The trip takes about 60 minutes. $13 one-way

Taxi:  Pricey for the Solo-Traveler

Taxis are metered when going from JFK International Airport to La Guardia Airport and most cost between $26-$30.  Expect the ride to be at least 30 minutes but can take up to 60 minutes in times of peak traffic.

My recommendation:  The New York Airport Service express bus is the best choice for the price.   The taxi can be cost-efficient if you split the ride with at least two other people.  Only take the AirTrain-Subway-Bus combination if you have a lot of time and are looking to take the "scenic" route.
