Travel from New York to Boston for Just $1.00

by Heather on April 17th, 2008

boltbus Just last month, the BoltBus started service between New York and Washington D.C. and it looks like business has been good for the Greyhound company; next week they will begin service to Boston.

There will be six daily trips between the two cities with departures from New York at 7am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, and 5:30pm.  All buses to Boston depart from near Penn Station at 34th Street and 8th Avenue (map) at the northwest corner of the intersection, in front of the Tick Tick Diner.

Fares are for sale using first-come, first-served incentives.  There will be a limited number of $1 tickets available for every departure and prices will rise as the bus fills to capacity.  All buses are equipped with standard 110v power outlets and free Wi-Fi, though they have been experiencing technical problems with Wi-Fi access for Apple notebooks for sometime.

Service is scheduled to begin Thursday, April 24th.  Act fast, there are still a limited number of $1 tickets available for purchase online.  Sadly, I think this will finally mean the end of my adventures on the Chinatown bus.

It’s true! 4/24/08 depart from S. Station Boston to NYC; return of 4/27/08 - Round trip three tickets total of $6.00.

    Completely amazing.

That’s fabulous– thanks for the update! I hope they add more departures in the near future.

It’s a tragedy. However, luckily, Eastern and New Century, with their good reps, have been fortunate by not losing too much of their customer base. It’s survival of the fittest. Of course, if Bolt Bus (aka Greyhound in a costume), expands its schedule, the competition would kill all but maybe one of the “independent operators” (I don’t see Chinatown bus as a fitting name)

I was in Boston’s South Station this weekend waiting for my 10:30am BoltBus and I was a little surprised to see people wait an extra half-hour, and perhaps pay a little more, to take the Fung-Wah or the Lucky Star.

I personally will probably continue taking the Fung Wah because I don’t want to deal with the nightmare of Midtown Manhattan. The Chinatown stop is so much more convenient for those of us that live downtown.

Regarding “Chinatown Bus” vs “Independent Operators”… I am just calling it what they call it. As I walk down Canal Street it’s always a chorus of “Chinatown bus to Boston. Fifteen Dollars. Chinatown Bus to Boston…” from the vendors.

Thanks again for stopping by and taking your time to comment, Mr. Sawatzki!

[…] I finally had the opportunity to take the BoltBus (which I have covered extensively here and here) from Boston to New York!  I didn’t get one of the “as advertised” $1 fares, […]
