Holiday Gift Guide Day 6: Gifts for the Techie

by Heather on December 8th, 2007

It seems that every time we turn on the television there is a new tech gadget that is being marketed. Here are a few items that are sure to make the techie on your list very happy.

ironkey A thumb drive that self-destructs after multiple failed password attempts? No, it’s not a scene from Mission: Impossible, it’s the Ironkey thumb drive. Developed for the US military, this thumb drive holds up to 4G of data and includes an encryption chip that scrambles data so it is unreadable without a password. Oh yeah, about that password, if there are 10 incorrect password attempts the Ironkey fills with epoxy rendering the chip useless. Ironkey is now available online to anyone wanting to protect their top-secret documents, photos, and data. $78.99 - $148.99

Still on top of the techies wish-list is the Apple iPhone. The iPhone is a widescreen iPod, displays Google maps, streams YouTube and other video, checks email, and even operates as a telephone! Just make sure you have the correct data package so you don’t receive a $3,000 bill! Available online and at AT&T stores across Manhattan. 8G available for $399, data packages from $59.00.

wiiThe two hottest gaming consoles flying off the shelves this year are the Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation 3. Every gamer has a preference, so check with them before purchasing. I am partial to the PS3 just because it has the capability to play Blu-Ray discs (can you tell I’m not a gamer?). The Nintendo Wii was released over a year ago and demand still outpaces supply so you may have to hire your own private investigator to locate a unit. Nintendo Wii $249.00 and Sony Playstation 3 $499 and up.

That ironkey thumb drive is awful. My work purchased one for all staff and discovered that they only worked on a few computers (randomly) and that getting the thing to read your thumb was a pain in the butt.

That’s no good! So much for US military intelligence! I guess we’ll just have to stick to the tried-and-true USB flash drives. Thanks for the info Bellie!

The “James Bondness” of the thumb drive has great appeal, but in reality why pay that kind of money when you can password protect your files any way, yes boring, but much more reliable!
